Freelance writer and editor. April 2006 to present.
Have pitched and written stories for publications as diverse as Cooking Light, The Lutheran, ReadyMade, Sunset and more. Have served as copy chief, copy editor and content editor for a variety of editorial and corporate clients, listed here and here.

InStyle, New York, N.Y.  August 2000 to March 2006.
Deputy Copy Chief. Copy edited and proofread stories for two-million-circulation celebrity/fashion/beauty/lifestyle magazine. Acted as copy chief in chief's absence, scheduled and trained all freelancers, monitored copy flow and copy editors' deadlines, helped monitor style consistency. Also served as senior editor for "Where Can I Find ..." shopping page for three years. Proposed and wrote half a dozen short pieces.

FSB (Fortune Small Business), New York, N.Y.  July 1997 to August 2000.
Copy Chief. Copy edited and proofread all stories for 1.25-million-circulation small-business magazine published by Fortune. Managed copy flow and close of each issue, helped create book mockups, and worked as liaison between edit, design and production. Proposed, wrote and edited stories. For first six months worked simultaneously as copy editor for Money.

Kiplinger's Personal Finance, Washington, D.C.  March 1995 to July 1997.
Copy Editor. Copy edited features and departments of one-million-circulation monthly magazine for style, grammar and sense; updated and fit stories in layouts; and proofread. Proposed and wrote two back-page stories.

National Geographic, Washington, D.C.  July 1990 to December 1993.
Assistant to Associate Editor. Assessed editorial/photographic budgets for articles and provided all administrative support. Pitched two features that were approved and published (by other writers; one was a cover story). Also was a staff editor/writer for National Geographic Insider in-house magazine.

Illustrations Assistant. Researched photo possibilities for story segments, drafted layout captions and completed administrative work for two picture editors. Also secured and edited photographs from stock agencies.

Illustrations Assistant. Managed photo contest entries and supported three picture editors administratively.

Manning, Selvage & Lee, Washington, D.C.  August 1988 to December 1989.
Account Executive. Wrote news releases, wrote and produced client newsletters, coordinated special events and assisted senior account executive with all facets of comprehensive public relations programs.

MSJ in Magazine Publishing, December 1994. Completed courses that included publishing, editing, copy editing, writing and media management. Concentration in urban reporting.

Editor, Grounded, Fall 1994. Managed staff of 20 for a national news and issues magazine for high school students, a prototype publication of the Medill magazine program. Drafted mission statement, created editorial board, organized and edited content, and secured celebrity for question-and-answer department. Also wrote articles for publication.

Intern, The Chicago Reporter, Summer 1994. Reported and wrote investigative feature about alleged inequalities for Latino U.S. Postal Service workers in Chicago.
